About babes

Here In North Lincolnshire, mums and dads are helped on their breastfeeding journey by babes (Babies and Breastfeeding Extra Support). You may have seen them around Scunthorpe General Hospital or out in the community wearing trademark pink shirts with their distinctive babes logo.

The babes in their trademark uniform.

These are Mums who are breastfeeding or have breastfed their own babies and have then gone on to do further training, to support you whilst you are breastfeeding. There is plenty of help out there both voluntary and professional. You are not alone. Breastfeeding information and support is always available from health professionals and peer supporters.

About Breastfeeding

Feeding breast milk has lots of health benefits for both mum and baby. Mum’s milk gives a baby all the nutrients he or she needs for the first six months of life. Breast milk is not just a food; it has many other properties which help babies develop into healthy children and healthy adults, giving babies the best possible start in life.

Some of the benefits of breastfeeding include:

  • Reduces the chances of illness for baby
  • Increased health benefits for Mum
  • Lessens risk of post natal depression
  • It’s free and ready anytime
  • No preparation needed
  • No fuss / no mess
  • Helps you get your figure back (breastfeeding burns an extra 500 calories a day)
  • Nappies are less smelly!
  • Helps build a stronger bond between mum and baby

The advantages of breastfeeding are immediate and continuous in promoting good health. Breastmilk contains antibodies which help protect the infant from infection reducing the risk of asthma, eczema and childhood diabetes.

Research shows breastfed babies are also at lower risk of gastroenteritis, respiratory and urinary tract infections and infections of the middle ear. For the mum, there are long term benefits such as reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer and she is less likely to develop osteoporosis in later life. Recent research highlighted that breastfeeding may also reduce the risk of Type11 diabetes, obesity and postnatal depression.
